Product Review 9 - Bockingford Tinted Watercolour Papers (Oatmeal, Cream, Blue, Eggshell and Grey)
In this video I am reviewing Bockingford Tinted Watercolour Papers by St Cuthbert’s Mill (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCK198_oxFLxQMvjxsq7i-Jw). As well as the usual white, they come in Oatmeal, Blue, Duckegg, Cream and Grey. They are only available in 300gsm (140lb) Cold-Press, and come in Imperial, Half and Quarter sizes. In this review, I do a pen and ink sketch based on Peter Sheeler’s Porto urbansketch (https://youtu.be/-scpBUY_Fn0) – it’s not intended to be a replica at all, just “inspired by” – and making 6 copies is boring as hell! I then paint over it with watercolour and then examine how the moods of each picture are different because of the colour of the paper – I’ve listed all of the supplies used at the bottom of this description and you can find a full list of links to the tinted Bockingford in all sizes over at my website (http://www.the-spin-doctor.co.uk/2016/07/bockingford-tinted-watercolour-papers.html). If you just want to try them out, you can buy a Trial Pack with 2 Quarter Imperial sheets of each tint, or you can buy them in the larger sizes in individual colours – I’ve listed all of them below with links to purchase them for both the UK and USA. I’ve listed various different pack sizes though you won’t see all pack sizes for all tints – this is because some just aren’t available online and also because I’ve listed the most economical options where possible, rather than listing everything. SUPPLIES USED: (all prices as of 15th July 2016) My Bockingford paper came from a sample pack from St Cuthbert’s Mill, but you can try it out yourselves by getting one of the following trial packs. Product Review 13 - Millford, Saunders Waterford and Bockingford Watercolour Papers
In this video I review 3 types of watercolour paper from St Cuthbert's Mill. This is mainly a review of Millford paper, which replaces the old Whatman watercolour papers discontinued in the 1980s, but as I'm comparing it to Bockingford and Saunders Waterford, I've kind of ended up reviewing all of them together. St Cuthberts Mill gave me small sample pieces of each paper to try them out and I opted to review them. These are my own opinions - I have been given nothing for this video by the manufacturers and they have not endorsed or paid for this review in any way - all views are entirely my own, good or bad. I test: 1) How dye and mineral pigment watercolours appear. 2) How well dye/mineral paints lift after 1h and 24h. 3) How well masking tape lifts. 4) How well masking fluid lifts 1) After drying for 1h [Winsor & Newton Masking Fluid] and 2) After drying for 30 mins, painting over and then drying for a few hours [Art Gum Masking Fluid] 5) I also look at general brightness of dye based colours and the textures they achieve on the different papers.
